OK ... Now you may as well know, I think David Kopel is one of the sharpest minds your ever going to hear about, so I have my bias in reading these exchanges. As it happens I have had experience with firearms and self defense, so my opinion will be colored by that as well.

Havinf made those admissions, I urge you to follow the link, and read all three days worth of articles. It won't take long, and you can reach your oown conclusions. If your really interested in the truth, you can also follow up on the claims of both writers, and track down the sources that they are referencing in thier debate. Remember ... you are responsable for your own ignorance if you just let others tell you what to believe.

Anyway, I hope you find thier exchanges interesting.

Simply explained, Lawrence O'Donnel in a hyper-emotional manner, repeats factual inaccuracies while trying to place blame for the recent tragedy in Virginia.  Either he is intentionally misleading, or he is negligent to the point it borders on criminality. For arguments sake, lets assume he is just incredibly misinformed, and ignorrant.

If you are simply a couch-potato-media-sponge with no personal experience to draw upon, you might believe O'Donnel actually knows what he is talking about. This means that when you share what you have 'learned' from O'Donnel, yakking on the phone with your friends, you will pass on the same emotive misinformation and through such means, wrong information will eventually color the national debate on Second Amendement rights.

In other words, stupidity IS contagious! 

I went to the trouble to gather some facts. O'Donnel doesn't understand 'guns' or is willing to lie about them. The guns used to commit this mass murder were semi-automatic pistols, and were never illegal during the history of US Federal Gun Laws. The magazines used in these pistols were not illegal to purchase, own, or posses at any time during the history of US Federal Gun Laws. Neither gun, nor magazines were especially remarkable as weapons go.  O'Donnel actually claims they were illegal, which is simply not true.

If he is merely confused, it may be because he doesn't bother to check his facts. Here are a few for you.

So called 'high capacity' magazines were not allowed to be manufactured during the last major anti-gun legislation. I believe there were exceptions for military, and police production contracts, but manufacturing for the public was curtailed. There were still plenty of them around, and the law didn't bar anyone from buying or selling them as they had previously.

Just so you know, a 'high capacity' magazine as defined by that law, can hold no more than 10 rounds. By way of comparison, a farmer in Kansas 140 years ago could buy , and own a rifle holding 16 rounds in it's magazine, so the standard for 'high capacity' is an arbitrary figure.

The pistols used were 'semi-automatic' pistols, and as such, do not 'spray' bullets while the trigger is held down. You have to pull the trigger for each bullet fired. Semi-automatic pistols have existed for over 100 years, and 'double action' pistols which use a different mechanism to do basically the same thing, have existed for longer than that!

O'Donnel calls this a "High tech" crime.  Yup! Sure! If you consider the horse and buggy 'high tech' I guess you could make that argument. 

The only things 'high tech' about this crime are these:  The way our society has set up it's citizens to be defenseless when they are attacked by law breakers is a result of technology induced 'gun' hysteria over the airwaves.  The way technology is used to organize and politicize the reactions we see spreading all across the country, and the way modern communication can spread propaganda, and misinformation, WHICH leads to emotional stupidity at the ballot box.

This IS a crime and a tragedy! IT IS being politicized. And when one side of a political argument starts, the other side has to rally it's own forces, or leave the field to thier enemy. So here we are, in this sick and twisted game of trying to wring advantage from the horrible massacre of dozens of bright young people, who simply lacked the means to save themselves, and were killed for it.  This can't be a proud moment for anyone on the political scene, and yet, the battle lines ar being drawn, and the agendas are marching.

And I join them. Not happily

Check out the vid that Allahpundit has at the link. Watch O'Donnel, and remember, these talking heads control your perceptions of reality if you are to lazy to gather facts on your own. Nuff' said!

If this works right, you'll see a vid on YouTube which makes an interesting argument about the way a large portion of the country reaches various conclusions. I encourage thoughtful discussion of the points made in this video, but please try to keep them polite.  And I need to say thanks to The JAWA Report where I first saw this linked.  Thanks Jawas

HERE WE GO KIDS

As the UN leadership wriggles uncomfortably, and ineffectvely with Iran's growing nuclear program, others take the hint. Egypt has made it clear they would like to join the nuclear community, and now we see Jordan popping up with the same thing.

While Egypt and Jordan are often regarded as moderate nations in the Middle Eastern politics, a little digging shows danger below the surface. terror friendly groups find popoular support in both countries, as per the Muslim Brotherhood, which actulally participates in Egypts politcs, or the large body of 'palestinians' in Jordan, who praise Hamas, as they used to praise Saddam.

The Middle East is not a stable place. Many would argue that nuclear development in the region is none of our business, but as the world continues to shrink, we learn that Buddha haters in Afganistan actually can help kill thousands in New York City.  If the governments of Jordan, or Egypt ever became radicalized through elcetions, or overthrow, who would be taking care of the nuclear fuel then?

Well here we are as a nation facing another tragic loss of life. Since I suspect all of us here have at least a minimal contact with the Main Stream Media (MSM) it seems likely that you have heard something about the latest homicidal rampage in Virginia.

As it stands, we may be looking at a new world speed record for politicizing horror. I am a fairly frequent commenter at mypetjawa, or 'The Jawa Report' and I am not usually shy about firing off my opinion if I feel like it. Even still, some of the dust tends to have settled before myself, or others offer much more than questions, or 'what ifs'.  Most commenters seem to want to actually know something before spouting off.

Not so with the voices that dominate our MSM. Political agendas were fired into motion at a truely impressive pace. 'Context' was provided before facts were known. A man having nothing to do with anything that happened was held forth in commentary by the famed Geraldo Rivera as the likely culprit, on purely circumstantial evidence. That man has since recieved death threats for something he was not involved in at all.

The anti-gun lobby was firing away with eveything they had before we even had the victims out of the building, let alone really knew how many there were. Likely as not, the dead were still warm when these ghouls started feeding on them in the excitement. As if somehow we coudn't wait for the funerals, or give the families time to react.

Forseeing the anti-gun manuvers, pro-gunners were quick to rally in various media, lamenting the detail that none of the victims was able to defend themself because gun laws only disarm the honest.

Some politicians had the wit to hold back any strong commentary, but the MSM lavished attention on thier 'spin' of choice, and wallowed in the human suffering. I lose more respect for the MSM with each day.

Anyway, I consider you have all heard enough about this, so I'm cutting it short. take responsability for your own safety, and avoid becoming food for ghouls.

Hello to all visitors. This is my first experience with any kind of blog where I'm not just leaving my opinion in the 'comments'.  I've don't suppose it's rocket science, but since I'm new at this, I'm bound to be a bit rough around the edges.

I guess if NASA scientists can miss the entire planet of Mars when they make a mistake, mine won't seem so astronomical. 

This week my Mother almost died, and was only rescued due to good fortune, and an ambulance. As a result, I've been a little distracted. So I'm not off to the kind of start I would hope for. Still, If you stick around for a few weeks, I do intend to make your visits worthwhile.

My main area of interest these days is politics. When I'm trying to escape from the daily horror that 'politics' has become, I like to get away into science fiction, and fantasy entertainment. Basically, I will focus on politics until I get depressed, and then I will probably talk about the next Spiderman movie, or something.

My first efforts will be to figure out how to put in the YouTube vids so you all can look at some things I hope you find interesting. There is lots of political stuff happening on Youtube these days. Everyone is out there trying to make a point for thier 'side', and drown out the voice of the 'other' side.

As to sides, I'm an American first. My politics are based on a love for the US Constitution, and a hope to see it prevail as the basis for law in America. I express my ideology simply. I say "USA, all the way!"  I think the essence of being an American is to love and guard the excellence that our Founding Fathers put into this Republic, at the risk of thier own lives. If you love the USA, and want to see her beautiful, and strong, then we are on the same 'side'.

As I continue getting used to this, I plan on sharing a bit about where I think the best online current events sources are. I won't claim that any source is without bias. I do claim to try and seek out information which gets poor coverage in the Main Stream Media (MSM)  I doubt we will spend much time at all on topics like what Brittany Spears is, or isn't wearing. If that disappoints you, I'm sure there are a million other places you can find that 'other' stuff out.

I think that's all for now. As I get the hang of this, it will get better, and I hope we can see some discussions get started soon. Thanks to all who are interested.
